A spread of five Malaysian dishes on a traditional batik tablecloth

Malaysian cuisine is one of the most underrated food cultures in the world. Shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, it is bold, fragrant and endlessly layered. Here are five dishes at TNF Restaurant that every food lover must try.

1. Nasi Lemak Special (RM 18)

The undisputed national dish of Malaysia. Ours comes wrapped in banana leaf with house-made sambal, crispy anchovies, roasted peanuts, cucumber and a perfectly boiled egg. Start here if you are new to Malaysian food.

2. Char Kway Teow (RM 16)

Flat rice noodles tossed in a screaming-hot wok with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts and dark soy sauce. The magic ingredient is "wok hei" — the slight char and smokiness that only a seasoned wok and high flame can produce. Ours is cooked over charcoal.

3. Laksa Lemak (RM 16)

Rich, creamy, complex. Our laksa broth simmers for six hours every morning. The coconut milk base is balanced by lemongrass, galangal and a blend of twelve spices. Tofu puffs absorb the broth beautifully. Mildly spicy — ask for extra sambal if you like heat.

4. Rendang Daging (RM 28)

The crown jewel. Slow-cooked for four hours until the beef becomes tender and the coconut milk reduces into a dark, caramelised crust. Eaten with steamed jasmine rice and acar (pickled cucumber). Worth every ringgit.

5. Family Package (RM 120)

If you are visiting with family, order the Family Package. It feeds four to six people with a full spread: nasi lemak, rendang daging, sambal prawns, stir-fried greens, soup and drinks. It is the closest you will get to a Malaysian home-cooked Sunday lunch without being invited into someone's house.

Our Recommendation

Visit on a weekday morning when the kitchen is at its freshest. Pair your meal with a proper teh tarik — pulled to a perfect froth by our in-house barista. No visit to TNF Restaurant is complete without it.
